Staging area.

Before you begin your experiment, the computer group will assign you an event, or staging, area. A staging area is temporary disk space allocated to your experiment. The staging area is where your event data will be stored before it is rolled out to tape. Once the experiment is complete, you should roll your data out to tape as soon as possible, and let the computer group know that your staging area can be re-used. Data in the staging areas are not backed up.

Your account directories are not intended for event data. The space available on the disks that your home directory is on is limited. Do not store event data on your account home directory or subdirectories, only put event data in your staging area.

To use the data acquisition system, you must describe to the data acquisition system where your staging area is located. This is done by creating a symbolic link in your home directory named stagearea. Suppose you were assigned the stage are: /user/event6/event6. You can make this link by typing:

ln -s /user/event6/event6 ~/stagearea

Be sure this symbolic link is set up correctly before recording event data.
