Structured Task List

When setting up for an experiment, at the NSCL you must accomplish all of the tasks in the outline below. Refer as needed to the referenced supporting material.

• Set up Readout software.
  • Copy the Readout Skeleton
  • Modify the skeleton to read your electronics.
    • Determine your event format.
    • Write classses to support your readout
  • Build and test Readout interactively
    • If necesssary, modify the Makefile
    • Make the program.
    • Run it and check the event stream format (gdb can help).
• Set up SpecTc
  • Copy the SpecTcl skeleton
  • Modify the skeleton to process the data from Readout into parameters
    • Make classes that can decode top level packets
    • String the classes into a set of event processors that convert the raw event into parameters.
    • Create additional event processors if desired to e.g. Compute pseudo parameters, apply calibrations etc.
    • Register event processors to create the event processor pipeline
  • Build and test Spectcl with some saved test data from Readout.
  • Set up SpecTcl Startup Scripts
    • Define parameters
    • Define spectra
    • If necessary modify SpecTclInit.tcl to select appropriate program limts.
    • If desired, modify SpecTclRC.tcl to add scripts, GUI elements to SpecTcl.
  • Test all of this with data from Readout.
• Run the system
